Before: not a ton of rust, but some. The weatherstripping was old, and so there was a bit of dampness in there that caused some rust, plust 40+ years of grime and dirt!
During: After I degreased, I wire brush sanded the rusty spots and removed as much as I could all inside. Sucked up all the dirt and converted the rust. I then put a couple of coats of the encapsulator/primer.
After: primed up and ready for speckle paint and clear coat.
What a difference!
As you can see, the door is being held up with a stick. Layson’s Restorations has the prop strut that I will install, and I will get the board for over the spare there also. The board that comes down from the fastback into the trunk is getting old, I may cut another one and put carpet on it. I can’t wait until it’s all done!
Got to spend a nice afternoon drinking beer, and restoring the trunk. The trunks aren’t that big, as you know, so it wasn’t too bad. I was happy to see that there wasn’t much rust at all back there! 40+ years of grime was in place, however. Got a degreaser, wire brush sanded down the rust that was there, used the chemicals that turns rust to an inert oxide, sprayed a rust encapsulator, and then sprayed 2 coats of the speckled grey/black/white stuff. It looks nice! Need to put a clear coat to finish it, and get a new spare tire. The one that was in there was low, so we put air in it and it has a couple bulges on the side. The rim was a little rusty, and should be painted black again before getting a new spare. I also replaced the weather stripping so no more water will get in there. It wasn’t damp back there, but the old stuff needed to be removed, it wasn’t doing the best job. The next time I go down to Portland, I will stop by Layson’s Restorations and get the board that goes over the spare, and get the strut that keeps the trunk lid open, and a mat. It will be so nice to have a restored trunk!
